The programs of the College of Professional Studies (CPS) are designed with the requirements of adult learners and working professionals in mind. CPS offers undergraduate and graduate programs that address the competency requirements of adults working in emerging and rapidly changing professions. The College's innovative programs are co-developed through collaboration between University content specialists and outside partners such as government agencies, professional associations, consulting organizations, and business and industry leaders.
CPS programs draw from multiple academic disciplines and are delivered in flexible formats: face-to-face, online, or a blend of both. By combining University faculty experts with accomplished practitioners, the College of Professional Studies is a catalyst for academic innovation, constructing credentials for the workforce that uphold the University's rigorous standards of academic excellence and respond to the needs of today's professionals.
CPS Online programs are characterized by three main concepts: content customization, flexible delivery, and curriculum modularization.
Content customization is achieved by tapping into the vast intellectual capacity available at GW, and by infusing into the program development, the vast wealth of knowledge embedded in our organizational partners. This collaborative process addresses specific competency requirements and learning objectives, producing the best possible customized program.
Flexible delivery refers to our insistence on offering the programs in a format most suitable for learning by adult professionals. CPS utilizes the most recent advances in instructional technology and proven traditional pedagogy to deliver its programs.
Curriculum modularization, both at the course-level and the program-level, allows CPS to build more flexible and yet robust curricula that address professional needs and are easier to assess and modify, if needed. CPS uses the stackable certificate model to modularize curricula that can be divided into smaller self-contained units representing certificates of accomplishment of a certain level of knowledge and skills. These certificates, stacked together, will satisfy the curriculum requirements for a given degree.
